Why PROP 50 Hurts Merit Shop CONSTRUCTION WORKERS & Contractors

Proposition 50 poses a clear and present danger to the principles of open competition that underpin a fair and thriving marketplace. By restricting access and favoring select interests, this measure threatens to shut out merit shop contractors and construction workers, killing jobs and driving up costs for projects such as schools and affordable housing - projects that California needs to thrive.

Maintaining a level playing field is essential—not only for businesses but for the families and communities that depend on affordable, quality options. A vote against Prop 50 is a vote to protect open competition and ensure California’s economy remains vibrant and inclusive.

IF PROP 50 PASSES, EVERYONE PAYS THE PRICE

💸 Higher costs – Gerrymandered districts empower more politicians who push union-only PLAs, excluding merit-shop workers and driving up prices.

🚫 Less opportunity – 85% of California’s construction workers are non-union and could be shut out of federal jobs

⚠️ Fewer champions – Congressional reps from gerrymandered districts will push policies that hurt infrastructure, permitting, and construction growth in rural/suburban areas. Their successors will likely share their agenda.

that goes for our elections as well.

Proposition 50 would permit Sacramento politicians to dismantle fair representation maps already drawn by California’s Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission, wrecking the system voters approved to take political bias out of Congressional redistricting.

Sacramento politicians have already stated that if Prop 50 passes, they will redraw your community’s Congressional districts however they want, which will benefit labor unions at the expense of the merit shop community and everyday Californians.

That’s not fair representation. That’s rigging the rules.

What Does Prop 50 Really Do?

Why We’re Fighting Back

Associated Builders & Contractors Northern California is standing up against Prop 50 because it threatens everything our members stand for:

  • Merit over membership

  • Fair, open competition

  • Accountability in government

When union-backed politicians redraw maps, non-union contractors get locked out — and California taxpayers get stuck with inflated costs.
